F1 Driver Website Review
01.20.26 – In this post I take a look at the official websites of the drivers from the 2025 F1 season. Normally when I review sites I do a full design and content breakdown looking at every single page in the architecture, but for purposes of this post I’m doing more of a semi-detailed first look through each driver site.
What are the expectations:
Every driver site should have this base level amount of built-in content:
-About/Career, Schedule/Results/Standings/Reports, News-Updates/In the News, Photo Gallery (all races by year), Sponsors (Logo/Description/Link), Store (Team/Personal)
The next level up includes value-add content that combats a one-and-done visit scenario:
-Off-Track, Fan Q/A, Sponsor Contests, Race Preview Video, News Features/Articles, etc.
*For obvious reasons a key consideration when developing an official site content strategy is how active the driver is on social media. The answer to this question will drive a lot of the strategy going forward.
Reasons for Failure:
When official sites fail to meet fan expectations, the first inclination is to blame the athlete. In some cases this can be true, but in my experience it was rare that the athlete was the primary driving force behind the site, fact of the matter it’s just usually lower on their priority list.
I’ve found that in most cases the fault really lies with the people around the athlete, specifically their manager/agent. Real scenarios—> family of top-tier athlete didn’t want to pay $25 for hosting per month; agent at top-tier representation agency for top-tier athlete didn’t believe in value of websites (pre-social taking off too if you can imagine).
The manager/agent should be the driver, or if you prefer the “marketing/branding” team/person within their agency should be the driver. For every F1 driver there is simply no reason they shouldn’t have a professional looking website that includes the base level of built-in content. The agent/point person then works with the driver to educate them on ways to further enhance the website through their involvement in ways that don’t become intrusive and personal time drains. The strategy is pretty straight-forward.
Qualifications:
My personal experience working on racing-related websites include the following brands: Dale Jr, Martin Truex Jr., Danica Patrick, Kyle Busch, Scott Dixon, Mario Andretti, Graham Rahal, Trevor Bayne, Jenson Button, JR Motorsports, Andretti Autosport, Championship Off-Road Racing, Hefty Racing, Turner Scott Motorsports, McDonald’s Racing, etc.
Observations:
Outside of the mini-helmets, surprised to see most driver stores are not selling their team-related merchandise.
Twitch – you don’t see many NASCAR drivers with links to a Twitch channel so was interested to clickthrough and see the activity. Somewhat not surprising they were all outdated and basically in-active: CL has 2 videos from six years ago, GB has no videos, LN has videos from six years ago, GR has videos from six years ago…brutal.
LH: How can a 7-time F1 champion have no website, just a splash page with 4 links out.
LS: Social Feed has Twitter posts from 2023 | IG from 2021
NH, LH: Includes a LinkedIn profile link
KA: How does he not have an official site.
Overall came away under-whelmed with the quality (Design/Content) from the F1 driver sites. The lack of really any sponsor integration was surprising too, and also very little team integration. Somewhat surprising that the teams don’t just take over their driver official websites (fully understand possible issue with driver contracts, but there are solutions), or on some level the digital arm of F1.
2025 DRIVER SITES RECAP
For the short reviews I looked at four main areas:
-Content Architecture: main and secondary navigation, sub-sections, etc.
-Updated content: most websites are one-and-done visits, updated content is the solution.
-Sponsor integration: how do they showcase their sponsors, and do they integrate them in any unique ways (content, promotions, etc.).
-Design: is it professional, is it outdated, what is the brand impression it gives off.
